AbstractAbstract. The secondary forest covers large proportions of Amazonia agricultural frontier, representing an important source forest regeneration in the region. Some studies have addressed the fact that the spatial distribution of secondary vegetation varies according to the type of land use and land tenure. However, little is known about the relationship between infra-structure, land abandonment and secondary forest distribution in the Amazon. In this study we measure the presence of secondary forest in relation to the distance from the main and secondary roads in three settlement regions with different ages and infra-structure conditions along the Cuiabá-Santarém Highway. Preliminary results showed a positive relationship between proximity from main and secondary roads and the percentage of the deforested area covered by secondary vegetation in two of the three study sites. The secondary forest located along the better infra-structured area didn't show significant relationship with roads. The results highlight the importance of road infrastructure to understand the dynamics of land abandonment.
